Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to identify the ability and range of the smartphone utilization among the elderly. Moreover, the relationships among mental health, health behavior, and the ability and range of the smartphone utilization were identified.

Methods: A survey was conducted on 150 elders (age over 55 from July 24, to August 7, 2015.) We analyzed the survey data from 150 responses, excluding unreturned or incomplete surveys by using SPSS 22.0.

Results: 46.0% of the respondents had smartphones and 47.8% of them use smartphones to seek health information. The average scores of the ability and range the smartphone utilization were 20.05 and 43.42. Factors that influence the ability of smartphone utilization were gender, educational level, and employment status. Age and level of education were factors that influence the range of smartphone utilization. The higher scores in the ability and range of smartphone utilization indicated a higher level of health information usage. The health information user group had a higher depression score compared with non-user group.

Conclusion: The finding provides the basic information about the smartphone utilization among the elderly. Further study about the relationship between health behavior and smartphone utilization are needed.
